Processors

The CPU (central processing unit) is the central component inside any computer, and completes tasks and divides work up between other components. The processor market is dominated by Intel and AMD, and each firm has a range of models to suit different tastes and budgets: modest chips can cost as little as £30, make do with a couple of cores and only have enough speed to handle basic computing tasks, and high-end chips cost upwards of £200 – and they’ve got the cores, special features and pace to dominate the world’s most intensive software. Before you buy, ensure you’ve got a compatible motherboard and a cooler than can take the heat.
